Gang Prevention

Oakland Unified School District, Office of Alternative Education and subcontractors California Youth Outreach, Project Reconnect, and Hatchuel Tabernick and Associates provide gang awareness/prevention and family strengthening for at least 80 parents/caregivers of youth involved in gangs or at high risk of gang involvement per fiscal year. This program is led by experienced facilitators from Project ReConnect and utilizes its PARENT gang prevention program (Preparedness and Relationships Equals Non-violent Transformation). OUSD also provides gang prevention training for 450 staff at schools and local youth-serving CBOs. This training consists of: 1) 3 full-day trainings and 2) 30 site-specific capacity-building trainings at the agencies. These trainings will help staff understand gang dynamics and how they can intervene in gang involvement.
